What is the purpose of a crankcase heater?

The crankcase heater is an electrical device that can be installed in the compressor crankcase or wrapped around the lower part of a hermetically sealed compressor shell. The heater evaporates any liquid refrigerant that reaches the crankcase in the OFF-cycle of the compressor, protecting the compressor from any damage from the liquid refrigerant.
