What is a survey finding and and what are the consequences for them?

A hospital accreditation survey finding is a noncompliance issue identified during an accrediation survey. Findings show where the hospital does not fully meet a standard, element of performance (EP), or requirement. A finding can be any observed deficiency in compliance with safety, quality, or operational standards. It can come from direct observation, staff interviews, or document review.
High-level findings signify critical health or safety violations, potentially leading to another unannounced survey within a short timeframe. Severe findings may even result in accreditation revocation and suspension of CMS funding, impacting the hospital’s ability to operate.

Additional Resourses: CMS, JC, DNV
