What is an essential electrical system (EES) and why do hospitals have them?

The EES encompasses an entire electrical system designed to ensure continuity of electrical power to specific areas and functions during a disruption of normal power sources. It is divided into 3 branches: life safety, critical, and equipment which maintain a continuous and reliable power supply to critical areas, safeguarding patient health, and ensuring the overall functionality of the healthcare facility during normal and emergency situations.
