What is the Emergency Power Supply (EPS)?

The Emergency Power Supply (EPS) is a component within the emergency power supply system (EPSS) that generates electrical power serving the entire EPSS. The EPS is most commonly thought of as a diesel-fueled generator; however, NFPA 99, The Healthcare Facilities Code, permits Healthcare Microgrids, which allows for any combination of EPS’s to serve the EPSS such as solar panels, hydrogen fuel cells, wind turbines, co-generation, hydro-electric power, and more. To use a healthcare microgrid, a facility must elect the CMS Categorical Waiver.
